This hospital participates in international cooperation in the field of medicine, covering many specialties, and provides highly advanced and sophisticated medical care for patients with infectious diseases, chronic diseases such as diabetes and metabolic diseases and incurable diseases. The hospital, functioning jointly with the Bureau of International Cooperation and the Research Institute, plays an active role in offering opportunities for education to interns, researchers, and nurses from all over the world as well as providing medical care for foreigners who live and work in Japan. For several decades the hospital has also trained domestic interns, residents, nurses and, more recently also medical students, as one of the representative hospitals for postgraduate medical education. At the moment the nursing section is implementing a primary nursing system, in order to foster specialty of the nursing service and to emphasize the continuity of nursing for individual patients.

Intensive Care Unit

Each year, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at NCGM treats approximately 800 severely ill patients using a multidisciplinary approach to care. The unit is staffed by attending pulmonary and critical care physicians. Approximately 40 nurses, including intensive care nurse specialists, work in ICU. The 10-bed ICU cares for many post-operative surgical intensive care patients, including patients with various cancers, cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological emergencies.
